Tsugaru-nuri is a traditional lacquerware craft from Aomori, known for its rich presence and distinctive glossy depth. Among its signature techniques, Kara-nuri stands out as a finish created through nearly forty-eight meticulous steps. Layers of colored lacquer are applied, polished, and revealed, forming patterns that emerge uniquely on each piece—no two are ever the same.

This set of five tea saucers features the warm, golden-brown expression of the Kara-nuri style. Multiple layers of red, amber, and black lacquer are built up and polished to create markings reminiscent of tortoiseshell, glowing softly as if lit from within. The appearance shifts subtly with the angle of light, offering a refined yet gentle presence that suits both traditional tea settings and modern interiors.

Although originally designed as saucers for sencha tea cups, these trays can be enjoyed in many ways—as small accessory dishes, catch-all trays for keys or coins, bases for candles or small vases, or serving plates for tea bags, chocolates, or small treats. With five pieces in the set, you can use them throughout your home or arrange them together as a decorative display.

Lacquer deepens in luster as it is used, gradually becoming smoother and more familiar to the hand. This evolving beauty is one of the unique pleasures of Tsugaru-nuri. We invite you to experience the craftsmanship and quiet warmth of this traditional art in your daily life.

Precautions for using lacquerware

  • Please handle lacquerware with care, as the surface can be delicate.
  • When storing or using it together with other items, friction or accidental scratches may cause the lacquer coating to wear or peel.
  • Wash gently by hand, wipe dry with a soft cloth, and store in a place away from direct sunlight.
This will help preserve the lacquer surface for many years.
  • Do not soak the item in water. Prolonged exposure may cause the lacquer to deteriorate or peel.
  • Avoid using microwave ovens, ovens, direct heat, or dishwashers, as these may damage the lacquerware.
  • As this is a handcrafted lacquer item, please take care to avoid impacts, rubbing, or dropping it, as this may cause the lacquer to peel or the surface sheen to fade.
