This finely crafted incense box (kogo) is a beautiful example of Murakami wood-carved lacquerware (Murakami Kibori Tsuishu), distinguished by its deep vermillion hue and elegant sculptural relief. The surface features the Hōsōge motif, an auspicious classical design that combines flowing arabesques with peonies, hibiscus, and other graceful blossoms. Traditionally associated with good fortune and refinement, the motif adds a quiet sense of dignity to the piece.

Murakami wood-carved lacquerware is created through a unique process: the wooden base is first carved by hand, and then multiple layers of lacquer are applied over the sculpted surface. This method preserves the depth and movement of the carving while giving the piece a rich, lustrous finish. As light shifts across the surface, the relief reveals subtle shadows and highlights, offering a new expression each time it is viewed.

Opening the lid reveals a smooth, glossy black lacquer interior. The contrast between the vibrant exterior and the serene interior creates a refined space for storing incense used in tea ceremony. Beyond its traditional role as an incense container, the box is also perfect as an accessory case or small keepsake holder, ideal for rings, earrings, or other cherished items. It brings a touch of Japanese craftsmanship into everyday life.

A harmonious blend of auspicious symbolism and masterful technique, this piece is both beautiful to display and delightful to use. It is a work meant to be treasured for many years.

This product comes with a wooden storage box and traditional turmeric cloth to protect the lacquerware.

Precautions for Using Lacquerware

  • Please handle lacquerware with care, as the surface can be delicate.
  • When storing or using it together with other items, friction or accidental scratches may cause the lacquer coating to wear or peel.
  • Wash gently by hand, wipe dry with a soft cloth, and store in a place away from direct sunlight.
This will help preserve the lacquer surface for many years.
  • Do not soak the item in water. Prolonged exposure may cause the lacquer to deteriorate or peel.
  • Avoid using microwave ovens, ovens, direct heat, or dishwashers, as these may damage the lacquerware.
  • As this is a handcrafted lacquer item, please take care to avoid impacts, rubbing, or dropping it, as this may cause the lacquer to peel or the surface sheen to fade.
