This is a square Kutani ware plate in the Ko-Kutani style, made in Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture) during the late Edo period (estimated to be around the first half of the 19th century).
The vivid and bold flower and bird designs are painted in the five Kutani colors (red, yellow, green, purple, and indigo), which are characteristic of the old Kutani style. The surrounding arabesque patterns are painted with light brushstrokes, clearly showing the classic Kutani ware patterns.
The back side is decorated with a combination of plum arabesque and auspicious clouds. Auspicious clouds represent good fortune and are an auspicious pattern. In the center is a square inscription that reads "Fuku."
This is an antique piece that perfectly represents the characteristics of traditional Kutani ware, so we recommend displaying it and appreciating it, or using it as a bold small plate for everyday use, such as serving thick omelets on it.
