This "Shika Momiji" (Deer and Autumn Leaves) depicts three deer amongst fluttering autumn leaves.
"Deep in the mountains, stepping through the autumn leaves, I hear the cries of the deer - autumn is saddening," is a poem that appears in the Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Poems) from the Heian period, and autumn leaves and deer are associated with autumn, so they have become established as a good combination (seasonal word). Deer are also considered messengers of the gods, and in some areas they are carefully protected.
