This is a diamond-shaped Kutani ware plate in the Ko-Kutani style, made in Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture) at the end of the Edo period (estimated to be mid-19th century).
The vivid and bold flower and bird designs are painted in the five Kutani colors (red, yellow, green, purple, and indigo), which are characteristic of the old Kutani style. The surrounding area is also decorated with arabesque patterns, thatched roof patterns (tomaya), and arrow feather patterns, clearly showcasing the classic Kutani ware patterns.
The back side is decorated with a pattern of pine needles. This pine needle pattern is an auspicious design that symbolizes marital harmony, as it represents the idea that even after the leaves fall, the base of the two leaves remains firmly connected and never separates.
This is an antique piece that perfectly represents the characteristics of traditional Kutani ware, so it is recommended to display it and admire it, or to boldly serve sashimi or other dishes on it and enjoy it.
